She Can’t Afford Mascara was born from a need for South Asian representation in Europe’s underground goth scene. Created by Adam Shazard, the project draws from experiences in the queer club underground, where glamour became an act of survival despite financial hardship and a non-supportive Muslim family. Mascara is a field full of melodramatic, depressive truths about Pakistani goth trauma, the art of delusion and the glamour found on sticky underground dancefloors. Mascara is the meeting of New Beat, Goth, and EBM with Pakistani and ethnic musical traditions.
